'03 Boxster S Evap leak & vibration noise? '03 Boxster S Evap leak & vibration noise? I have an '03 Boxster S, with about 18,500 miles on it. I have two issues I was hoping you could help me with. Issue #1, the less mysterious of the 2: Check engine light has come on 3 times since I've had the car on the road since roughly early March. Each time it's the same error, for either a "large" or "significant" evap leak. Through testing, we've been able to rule out the gas cap, and the sensors check out OK, so they're functioning properly. Any ideas? I've been told an evap leak isn't more than pollution control measures, so it's not going to harm the car. But, your stomach does drop when the dreaded orange light pops on. Issue #2- vibration sound, related to RPM. The sounds is difficult to describe, it's a raspy metallic noise, sounds like a high pitched, loose tailpipe. Here's what I've been able to determine: -Only happens when the engine is up to temp, not when it's cold. -only occurs in the RPM range of 2800-3200 -the noise is not present below 2800, and goes away after 3200 RPM -happens whether the car is in neutral, or traveling (noise is exactly the same) -it doesn't sound like an internal engine sound, my limited mechanical know-how makes me think the speed/pitch/torque of the engine at those RPMs is making something else rattle. So there you have it... The car isn't leaking anything, nothing burning, no strange smells, behaves just as it should. Just had it's routine maintenence about a month ago, and nothing out of the ordinary popped up then. Thanks for your help, I do appreciate it. car insurance. Auto parts : Fog Light Switch Dodge 2005. Chrysler . How to Check the ECM on a 1995 Nissan AltimaThe ECM, or computer, on the 1995 Nissan Altima receives instruction from sensors. In turn, the computer provides instruction to other sensors and adjusts the ignition timing and injector timing for air-to-fuel ratio. If one of the sensors malfunctions, the computer will send a code. This will turn the "check engine" light on to warn the driver something is malfunctioning. You can check to see if the ECM works properly in a few simple steps. Difficulty:Challenging Instructions Things You'll Need Code scanner Set of wrenches Set of sockets Step by Step : 1 Plug the code scanner into the data link port under the driver’s side dash. Turn the key to the “On” position. Press the “Read” button on the code scanner. Write down the codes. 2 Compare the codes to the code sheet. If there are too many codes, the computer is suspect. If the code scanner gives you a code or several codes that do not exist, the computer is suspect. 3 Remove the negative battery cable, using the appropriate wrench. Set it aside, ensuring that it does not touch metal. Ground yourself by touching metal. Even the smallest static shock from your fingers could render a good computer bad. 4 Remove the wiring harness connectors on the back of the computer, using the appropriate socket. The bolt is in the center of the connectors. Most Altimas have three connectors on the back of the computer. Pull the connectors straight off the back of the computer, taking care not to bend the pins. 5 Unbolt the computer from its bracket. Remove the back cover on the underside of the computer, using the appropriate socket. Look at the circuit board inside. If the board looks burned near any of the solder joints, that circuit is bad, and the computer must be replaced.
Chrysler . Auto Diagnostic Scan ToolsThe "Check Engine" warning light on the dashboard of your car or truck appears anytime the electronic control module reports a problem in any of the vehicle's mechanical components. The "Check Engine" light is a signal to car owners that there is a problem with their vehicle that needs to be repaired. Diagnostic Scan Tools Diagnostic scan tools have been in use for more than twenty years. Before 1996, all the different car manufacturers had their own diagnostic equipment and codes that were unique to their vehicles. This meant that only a Ford code reader could read Ford error codes. Code readers were prohibitively expensive for most vehicle owners and many repair shops, sometimes costing upwards of $2,000, and would only work on some cars. In 1996, the EPA decided that all cars and trucks sold in the United States had to share the same general computer interface, an,d in turn, all use the same computer diagnostic equipment. Hence, the current code system was born. OBD II The second version of the On-Board Diagnostic system, called OBD II, is found in all cars and trucks manufactured in the United States since 1996. All of the electronic systems and sensors in your car or truck are run by the vehicle's powertrain control module (PCM), which is the vehicle's computer. When the PCM senses a problem with any of the hundreds of sensors and components it monitors or controls, it triggers the "Check Engine" light, otherwise known as the malfunction indicator light. The computer also logs an error code in its memory that corresponds directly with the malfunction. Because of the OBD II standard system, the codes can then be scanned and retrieved with any OBD II diagnostic scanner. Scanning for Codes OBD II code readers are relatively inexpensive and widely available now. The cheapest models sell for between $20 and $40 dollars at most auto parts stores. Auto parts stores also typically offer free diagnostic scanning services if you drive the car to their location. The scanner will be hooked up to the PCM and the car will be scanned for error codes. One or more codes may be found by the code reader. Reading Error Codes Error codes come in both generic and manufacturer-specific formats. The easiest way to determine what error code is connected to what part is to look it up in commonly available lists of codes. These lists of error code meanings are available at your local parts store and on the Internet, and basic code meanings will come with your code reader if you purchase one. *A very thin oil called transmission fluid fills the transmission system and generates hydraulic pressure. As the engine speed changes, the pump that pumps the transmission fluid to develop hydraulic pressure also changes speed. The transmission fluid responds to the changes in pressure by flowing through the transmission at different rates. When the car is moving slowly, the pressure is low, and only the low gears respond. In Drive, as the car's speed increases, so does the pressure, and higher gears are brought into play. The hydraulic pressure drives the transmission gears by means of friction bands and plates. These bands and plates do the same thing that the clutch on a manual transmission does — they pull various gears into and out of action. When mechanics tell you that your bands need adjusting, these are the bands they're talking about. They can usually make this adjustment without taking the transmission apart. * engages the front driveshaft along with the rear driveshaft so that all four wheels get power from the engine. In two-wheel drive, only the driveshaft connected to the rear wheels gets power from the engine, and the front wheels are disengaged. In four-wheel drive, the engine powers all the wheels. Four-wheel-drive (4WD) vehicles are different from all-wheel-drive (AWD) vehicles in that AWD vehicles send power to all four wheels all the time. AWD vehicles usually employ a center differential to split power from the engine to the front and rear wheels. Well, you've survived the ride on the drive train.
